June 19 marks the anniversary of the date in 1878 when Eadweard Muybridge, at the behest of former California governor Leland Stanford, took his famous series of photographs showing a horse in motion.

The images were done to settle the question of whether a galloping horse’s hooves are ever all off the ground at once (they are) but the photographs themselves became the forerunners of motion picture photography.
